In this class, students will consider and discuss the poems of specified traditional Japanese (lyrical) songs (日本叙情歌) from the point of view of translation. In addition, each student will be expected to give one presentation during the term on their own translation of, and the background to, a particular song.
A strong emphasis will be placed on discussion of the nuance of the Japanese terms, the cultural and social background to the poem or song, and the different possibilities of translation in English.
A great interest on the part of the students, not only in English, but also in their own mother tongue of Japanese, is an essential prerequisite for this class.
With the exception of reference to specific Japanese expressions, classes will be conducted entirely in English on the part of the instructor, and in discourse between the instructor and students. Similarly, students will be encouraged to acquire the habit of using English as a tool of communication between themselves.

Evaluation will be based on regular attendance, on constant conscientious preparation and active participation in discussion, on one presentation and feedback report per term, and on a final assignment. (In addition, please see below.)
Regular preparation of the songs to be translated and discussed each week is expected.
Important: Regular attendance, punctuality and a positive attitude are essential in this class. More than four absences will automatically result in a Fail. Lack of preparation and a consequent inability to contribute to discussion will inevitably affect the final total evaluation. Arrival after the start of classes will also be penalised. NB As the class will take the form of one or two presentations each week, it will be necessary to limit the number of students in the class to 18.
