Reading Documents of Japanese Traditions
 
授業の目標   
日本地域研究に必要な知識を身につけ、史料を読み解く能力を養うことを目標とする。とくにこの授業では、日本の伝統社会および19世紀初頭における海外との関係を理解するために必要な事項を念頭におき、講読する史料を選定して読み解く訓練を行う。
 
Goals of the course   
The aim of this course is to acquire the basic knowledge and ability to read historical documents, especially to research the aspects of Japanese traditional society and the relationship between Japan and the foreign countries in the beginning of 19th century.
 
授業の概要   
この授業では1799年から1817年まで長崎のオランダ商館員を勤めたヘンドリック・ドゥーフ（1777～1835）の『日本回想録』を読み、ドゥーフの目からみた日本社会や長崎貿易の特徴だけでなく、ロシアの南下やナポレオン戦争の影響を受けたロシア・イギリス船の長崎来航に、日本とオランダ商館がいかに対処したかについて考えていきたい。授業は、報告者を決めてテキストを順次講読してゆく。報告者は、テキストの要約を行い、担当部分から論点を提示す、その論点について参考文献などを参照してより深く調べて報告する。
 
Overview of the course   
In this course, students read the "Herinneringen uit Japan (Commentaries in Japan)" written by Hendrik Doeff who was the Dutch commissioner in the Dejima trading post in Nagasaki from 1799 to 1817, and learn not only how Doeff thought the characteristics of the Japanese traditional society and the trade in Nagasaki, but also how Doeff and the Japanese officer in Nagasaki coped with the Russian and British ships sailing to there. Each week assigned students summarize a part of the textbook, research further issues with reference books and make a report of them.

Grading system for assessment   
Comprehensive evaluation based upon; Attendance (20%), In-class report (15%), Active Learning (15%), Term-end assignments(50%)
 
事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
授業で講読する史料を事前に各自で読み、疑問点や意見などを、当日発言できるように準備しておくこと。
 
Preview/review   
Students are expected to purchase and read the textbook in advance of the class and to prepare questions or comments in order to be able to engage actively in discussion.
 
履修上の注意   
報告者以外の受講生も、コメントシートを毎回必ず提出し、自らの疑問点の明確化をはかること。
授業のうちの2回は、学外での関係施設調査および見学を実施する。
 
Notes   
All students write a short comment each week to clarify their own issues. We plan to go off-campus research on cultural heritages as Active Learning.
