アメリカの大学で日本史概説に使われる教科書を毎週1章ずつ読んでゆく。その内容に関するテストを行い、速読で情報を読み取り、文章の要点をつかむ練習を行う。

まず、速読を身に付ける。できるだけ辞書を使わずに速読して内容の要点と流れを理解できるようにする。1時間で10-20ページ読むことを目指す。
次に、内容の構成をつかみ取ることを目指す。各段落が何を言い、全体で何を言わんとしているかを読み取る。
メモ書き。英語の文章を読んで内容を再構成するためには、適切なメモ書きが必要である。書いてあることを理解しても何十ページも読んでいけば,結局何を言っていたか思い出せない。日本語でもそうである。特に,論理的に構成してある学術文献の場合、何をどのように書いてあったか整理する必要がある。そのためにも,読み取った箇所で簡潔なメモ書きを記しておくことは有用である。その短いメモで内容を思い出せる適切な要約をつける。
章や本全体で筆者が何を一番に主張したかったのか。それを読み取れるようにする。

・配布されるテキストを、なるべく辞書をひかずに読み進めておくこと。 ・全訳を行うのでなく、分からない単語をひきながら、原文の流れに即して読むこと。 ・内容をどう書き留めておくか、工夫してゆく。
