授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
The goal of this course is for students to improve their oral communicative competence by learning and developing impromptu presentation skills and engaging in meaningful, extended discussions on societal issues and current events relevant to university students.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
1. Students will learn essential presentation skills and strategies to perform a short, non-prepared presentation. Through practice, students will learn to think on their feet and effectively express themselves. They will learn be responsible for creating questions as well as conducting self and peer evaluation.

2. Students will learn communication strategies and functions for participating in extended, productive discussions of an academic nature. Supporting one’s opinions, considering different points of view, connecting ideas, disagreeing, clarifying, and further developing ideas through questioning, agreeing/disagreeing, and negotiating meaning will be emphasized.

3. Students will acquire vocabulary thru readings, in-class discussions, and from provided vocabulary lists. Using a free vocabulary application, students will create and study vocabulary cards each week

A final grade will be based on the following criteria:

• Presentations 20%
• Discussions & Tests 25%
• Management Roles 15%
• Reports, Reflections,
& Evaluations 20 %
• HW Assignments/Quizzes 20 %
 
事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
 
Preview/review   
a) Come to class prepared and ready to actively participate in the group discussions. Show leadership in the development of the discussions.
b) Provide constructive and respectful feedback.
c) Homework: prepare assigned presentation questions, do assigned readings, create vocabulary cards, and complete any related tasks prior to class each week.
d) Write weekly reflection records and reports.
e) Keep file folder to keep & organize all your handouts, records, and reflections. Bring your file to each class.
f) Review and internalize the communication functions and skills commonly used in discussions.
g) Sign up for the Edmodo (Free SNS site for Educational purposes.) Recommended to download free app. on mobile device.
h) Use only English for the entire ninety-minute class period.

Attendance Policy
Arriving late for three classes (5 minutes or more) will be considered as one absence.
Arriving 45 minutes late will be considered as one absence.
If you are absent four times, you will automatically receive a failing grade for course.
