The objective of this course is for student to understand the concepts imperialism and neoliberalism, which are essential for understanding modern Africa’s plight in the throes of globalization, and gain the capacity to use those concepts in explaining to others specific case studies from countries or regions chosen by each student.

現代アフリカが直面している諸事象をラディカルに捉えるために、地理学・人類学・社会学・政治哲学の学問的蓄積に基いて近代以降のグローバル・ヒストリーをアフリカの視点から編み直す作業をします。資本主義を持続させるために不可欠な本源的蓄積と過剰蓄積の解消を促す帝国主義と新自由主義の装置は、誰を排除し、誰を包摂するのか、いかに排除し、いかに包摂するのかを決定する統治性を生みだします。現在、世界は市場主義、競争原理、自己統治を加速化させる新自由主義の装置によって一つの方向に向かっています。アフリカが直面している課題は、決して遠いアフリカだけのものではなく、グローバルな世界に住むわれわれが直面している課題です。

In order to radically capture the various events that contemporary Africa is faced with, we will re-weave Africa’s perspective from global history since the late modern times founded on the academic accumulations of political philosophy, sociology, geography and anthropology. The mechanics of imperialism and neoliberalism necessary for sustaining capitalism impel the primitive accumulation and the elimination of overaccumulation and creates governance that determines who will be eliminated, who will be subsumed, how they will be eliminated and how they will be subsumed. Currently, the world is headed in a certain direction due to the mechanisms of neoliberalism that accelerate market principles, competition and self-governance. The issues that Africa is facing are not those of a faraway Africa, but are issues that we face living in a global world.

Evaluations will be based upon a term-end report [50%], two midterm reports (summary and analysis of foreign newspaper articles) [40%] and class participation (including comment papers) [10%].

The definitions of essential terms and vocabulary must be clearly understood by confirming their meanings in dictionaries and basic literature. Make it a habit of looking through the international sections of newspapers and being aware of the world’s spatial connections. Students should regularly collect news from the websites of foreign newspapers that pertain to their individual countries and regions of interest.
