授業の目標

Goals of the course
This course is offered to cover popular/public discourses on history writing throughout the 20th century. The objectives of the course are threefold: to introduce students to fundamental conceptual frameworks on what “popular/public” signifie(s), to understand the process of “popularization” of history, and to be able to differentiate historical facts and representations of the past.

授業の概要

Overview of the course
Following the three objectives, the course will be divided into three parts during the semester topically. While learning the key concepts on popular/public history (Week 2-5), we will be reviewing how the popularization of historical science takes place (Week 6-9) and how it can influence academic disciplines (Week 10-12).

[Final Project]
Students will write either a review article (based on at least two academic articles/books indicating different ideas on a subject) or a book review on a selected popular/public history topic.
Students are also required to submit her/his/their individual report (midterm report) on the final project two times: One will be due on May 20th (Week 6), in which her/his/their ideas and the list of readings for the review article/book review will be explained in detail. The other will be due on June 17th (Week 10), and she/he/they are supposed to submit an abstract and outline of the final paper then.
