[CAAS] The Pop Culture Media Mix

授業の目標

Goals of the course
The goal of this course is to turn students into “aca-fans”: fans who think critically about the objects they love and can place these in broader perspectives of culture, identity, and power. This means: 1) To familiarize students with the major academic literature on and theoretical approaches to popular culture and media convergence; 2) To familiarize students with applying theoretical frameworks to the study of popular culture, resulting in a written or audio-visual term project.

授業の概要

Overview of the course
Our use of media and cultural commodities has become increasingly complex. From a young age, we learn to navigate and connect the multiple levels on which media objects operate, and through phenomena such as fan fiction or vocaloids, we even know how to turn them to our own hands. Perhaps the most sophisticated examples of such media convergence can be found in the popular culture and media landscape of Japan. Yet, many of Japan’s pop-cultural objects – from Naruto to Baby Metal – reach a global audience, indicating a tension between cultural specificity and universal appeal. In this course we will trace the history and development of Japan’s “media mix” strategies and investigate how these intersect with wider issues of culture, identity, ideology, and international relations.
