授業の概要

Overview of the course
This course will examine the impact of religion, nationalism and identity on international relations. The discipline of International Relations (IR) conventionally refers to relations between territorial, sovereign states in an anarchic and unequal world. States, or independent political communities, are assumed to be the natural political community of mankind and to command the allegiance of those whom are subjected to their rule. However, the conventional view of IR has been challenged, on the one hand by globalization which has eroded the centrality of the state in IR, and, on the other, with the resurgence of religion, nationalism and identity in IR which has challenged the state from both within and outside.

This course will focus on the challenges posed to the primacy of the nation-state in IR with reference to religion, nationalism and identity in a (post-)global age. First, students will be introduced to theories of globalization before examining the resurgence of nationalism in the wake of COVID-19. Second, students will be introduced to theories of nationalism and whether the nation is "real" or "imagined". Finally, students will critically interrogate the relationship between religion and nationalism with reference to empirical case studies.
