Goals of the course   
1. To understand key concepts, theories, perspectives and controversies in major disciplines to study refugee and forced migration issues.
2. To cultivate skills to engage in critical analysis and develop one’s own arguments and perspectives in relations to forced migration issues.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
The prime objective of this course is to introduce students to the overview, theories, disciplines, and contemporary debates concerning refugee and forced migration studies. It aims at helping students to familiarise themselves with different approaches to study refugee and forced migration phenomena in the world and to be able to conduct critical analysis on some of the key aspects of current forced migration issues.

The instructor is specialised in refugee/forced migration issues and migration policy, and her disciplinary background is in Law, International Relations, and Politics. Prior to joining academia, the instructor worked as a national and international civil servant, working for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japanese Immigration Bureau (as an external expert), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and International Organization for Migration (IOM), among other institutes in various countries for about 15 years. Her practical experience and insight will be fully reflected in the lectures and discussions.

成績評価の方法・基準   
 
Grading system for assessment   
Class participation (active engagement with discussions): 20%
A reaction paper on ALH 1 and organisation of a seminar as ALH 2: 30%
End of the term essay (a 3,000 word essay on a question to be specified by the instructor): 50%

Notes   
Active participation in every class is required, in addition to reading of materials suggested every week.

Participation in an external seminar / event (to be specified by the instructor during the course), submission of a reaction paper on the event, and organisation of an open seminar among students themselves are required.

Particular emphasis is put on critical analytical skills to be demonstrated by students in discussions, questions, and a final term paper. Class discussions will reflect upon the timeliest topics of the day and students are expected to keep abreast of current global forced migration issues.
