Through the study tour to Nagasaki, the students will learn examples of history in the public sphere, such as: Global trade and movement of people in the early modern period / Christian mission, its local acceptance and the transformation / Modern industrialization of Meiji Japan / World War II and the impact of the atomic bombs / Merits and demerits of World Heritage registration to the local society / Inheritance of past memories and the promotion of tourism. Through analyzing these concrete cases, the student will deepen an understanding of the issues of global history of Japan, history, memory, and the use of the past in the public sphere, and will develop skills to manage the complicated relationship between academic historical knowledge and its practical use in the society.

In the preliminary learning, the students will gain basic knowledge about the geography and history of the Nagasaki Region and begin preparing a small presentation about a theme one is interested in. During the field study, the visits will be followed by the discussion in the groups. The students will need to give presentations on the last day of the tour. Submission of the final report is required as a review study of the course.

The evaluation will be based on the participation in discussions in the field study (35%), the presentation (30%), and the final reports (35%).

As a preliminary study, it is desirable for each student to acquire prior knowledge about the Nagasaki Region. Submission of the final report is required as a review study.
