Goals of the course   
There has been increased interaction between the Asian and African regions over the past decades. Growing levels of trade, investments and inter-regional migration have knit together these disparate regions, with complex political and developmental outflows.

At the same time, there is a lengthy history of interaction between Asia and Africa. For generations, the circulation of people, commodities, goods, religions and ideas across the Indian Ocean has shaped societies and political processes on both sides.

This module looks at the contemporary and historical dimensions of Asia-Africa relations, focusing on a range of interactions across the economic, diplomatic and societal spheres.

Overview of the course   
The module applies an explicit political-economy framework, centring questions of power, political agency, asymmetry and reciprocity in the relations. Specific aspects that are examined include the historicity and contemporary diplomatic use of the notion of ‘Afro-Asia’; the political economy of development in Asia-Africa relations (as seen through development paradigms and materialities such as infrastructure, resources and land); societal and cultural contact zones; and related cultural diplomacy.

Preview/review   
This module looks at the contemporary and historical dimensions of Asia-Africa relations, focusing on a range of interactions across the economic, diplomatic and societal spheres.

We discuss relations from the early modern to contemporary era, what has driven these ties, and the implications for African development over time.

講師は5～6月に来日予定。5月まではオンライン、6月以降は対面授業を実施する予定です。
 
Notes   
The lecturer is expected to arrive in Japan sometime in May or June. The class will be held online until May, and face-to-face from June.
