Translation and Interpreting Studies
 
授業の目標   
通訳・翻訳の実務能力を養う上で必要な理論研究を行い、言語・文化・社会の観点から総合的に通訳・翻訳分析を行う能力を養成することを目標とします。そしてそのために必要な通訳翻訳学理論を受講生の関心やニーズに合わせて学んでゆきます。
 
Goals of the course   
The goal of this class is to learn theoretical aspects of translation and interpreting in order to enhance abilities to comprehensively analyze translation and interpreting practices in terms of language, culture and society.
 
授業の概要   
訳出という営為について共に考えながら思考を深めます。また、言語行為および社会行為としての通訳・翻訳をめぐるメタファーの析出を通して、多様な通訳・翻訳形態ごとの役割、規範、倫理などを探ってゆきます。
夏学期は「翻訳学理論」を扱い、付随して主な言語学・社会学・哲学・記号学・異文化コミュニケーション学などの理論にも言及します。通訳を含む広義の翻訳に関して、言語・心理・社会・文化・歴史・政治・イデオロギーなど様々な側面から分析し、現在の日本のコンテクストにおける＜通訳・翻訳＞の意味環境を総合的に検討し、グローバル社会の中での日本の言語状況全体における＜通訳・翻訳＞のあり方と将来の展望について受講生の関心とニーズに合わせながら、一緒に考えてゆきます。最終的には、このようなメタ認知的な思考を深めることで、通訳翻訳実務における訳出の質の向上を目指すと同時に、社会行為としての通訳・翻訳の意義を考えてゆきます。また、修士論文その他、通訳・翻訳に関する学術論文を執筆するためのミニ演習も行います。授業形式は、①講義、②個人ベースでのプレゼンテーションと課題提出、③ディスカッション、の３種類です。
 
Overview of the course   
We deepen our understanding of translation acts in general by discussing and analyzing various types of metaphors which describe translation and interpreting, thus delving into roles, norms and ethics of professional practitioners.
In the summer term, we focus on Translation Studies. In the winter term, we focus on Interpreting Studies. In both terms, we cover linguistics, sociology, philosophy, semiotics and intercultural communication studies. We analyze a variety of aspects of translation and interpreting such as language, psychology, society, culture, history, politics and ideologies in order to systematically discuss semiotic circumstances of translation and interpreting in this current Japanese context. Through deepening our meta-cognitive thought, we hope to improve qualities of translation and interpreting performances and discuss social significance of those professions. The forms of this class is (1) lecture, (2) individual presentation and submission of homework, and (3) discussion.

授業における課題への取り組み、授業への貢献度、期末レポートなどから総合的に評価します。

履修上の注意   
・本講義は翻訳演習そのものとは異なり、自ら翻訳する場合にも、その結果を分析し受講生同士で講評し合うことに主眼を置きます。このような趣旨から、受講生同士のインタラクションを重視します。また、受講生独自の思考を重んじ、受講生の関心の所在に合わせて、随時講義内容を決定してゆくこととします。
・クラスでの議論は基本的に日本語を使用します。著書、論文の講読は英語と日本語が主要言語です。したがって、英語と日本語で翻訳に関する専門書がある程度読める実力が必要です。
 
Notes   
The content of this class will be determined depending on the interests of the students. We basically use Japanese, but we use English when reading books and papers. You are required to have enough ability to handle such a level of academic discussion.
