Title(English)
Multiword expressions in linguistics and NLP 1

授業の目標

Goals of the course
Multiword expressions (MWEs) are expressions consisting of multiple words whose meanings are idiosyncratic. They include compounds (e.g. language acquisition), idioms (e.g. on and off) and proper names (e.g. Kuala Lumpur). This course will survey important previous studies to understand basic problems and solutions concerning MWEs in linguistics and NLP, especially language resource development. Among of the issues to be discussed are:
- How can MWEs be distinguished from ordinary syntactic phrases?
- How do grammatical theories analyse MWEs?
- How have MWEs been handled in language resource development?
At the end of the course, students will have a clear idea of what are already known and what issues remain to be solved about MWEs, and be prepared to make original contributions to the field.
