Goals of the course   
The course aims to develop students’ theoretical understanding and pedagogical competence in using generative AI for language teaching. It introduces a range of applications of generative AI in language education, focusing on instructional design, classroom use, and assessment-related tasks. The course provides an overview of the current state of research on generative AI and language teaching, enabling students to critically engage with recent literature. Emphasis is placed on evaluating the affordances and constraints of generative AI tools for language teaching, as well as understanding emerging developments in the field. Ethical issues surrounding the use of generative AI in language teaching contexts will also be examined. By the end of the course, students will be able to make informed, responsible decisions about integrating generative AI into language teaching practice.

Overview of the course   
This course offers a systematic introduction to generative AI and its role in language teaching. It begins with foundational concepts and current developments in generative AI, followed by an examination of how these technologies are being used in language education. Students explore research findings on generative AI and language teaching, gaining insight into both pedagogical potential and documented challenges. The course integrates discussion of ethical, social, and professional considerations related to AI use in language teaching settings. Through guided analysis and applied activities, students learn to evaluate and design AI-supported language teaching practices. Theoretical learning is applied through two projects: one involving a critical analysis of research and another in a student-tailored project related to one’s professional and research interests. The course balances theoretical perspectives with practical exploration, preparing students to critically and effectively utilize generative AI in language education.
