History of European Architecture
 
授業の目標   
現在もなお、形としてとどめている遺跡や建築遺構さらには建築物で構成された都市の歴史とヨーロッパ文化の背景を学び、古代から現代までに培われた建築の歴史的な変遷を理解することがこの授業の目標である。これによって建築文化のみならず、文学や絵画などでモチーフとして登場する都市文化を考察・分析するための素養を身に付ける。
 
Goals of the course   
Learning history of the cities which consists of architectural remains and buildings, and their cultural background in Europe, at the end of the course participants are expected to understand the historical transition of European architecture from ancient to contemporary times. It also enhances the development of students’ skill to analyze and examine city culture which often appears in literature and paintings.
 
授業の概要   
授業では古代（ギリシア、ローマ）、中世（ビザンツ、ロマネスク、ゴシック）、近世（ルネサンス、バロック、ロココ）、近代（産業革命以降、歴史主義建築、アール・デコ）そして現代（第二次世界大戦以降、モダニズム、ポストモダン）と時代を区分し、それぞれの時代で発展した建築様式またはスタイルの特徴を中心に、それらが生み出された建築の文化的背景や建築技術や構造の変遷を歴史的に理解する。また大きな流れから枝分かれし、分岐するような建築のスタイルなりそれに関連する現象なども紹介しながら、様式の発展史のみならずヨーロッパにおける地域文化相互影響の一つとして建築を見ていく。現代を対象とした回では、西洋のみならず世界全体の建築潮流も扱う対象に含まれている。
 
Overview of the course   
This course deals with historical transition of the architectural styles and their features, especially of the cultural background of architecture, architectural technology and building structure according to the period classification such as Ancient Times, Middle Ages, Early Modern Period, Modern Times and Contemporary Time. It introduces architectural phenomenon related to architectural styles and originated from them, sees architecture as a part of mutual influences between regional cultures in Europe. In the lectures referring “Contemporary Age” we will focus on the architectural trends not only in Europe, but also all over the world.

学期末のレポート（60%）と出席（40%）を基に評価を行う。
 
Grading system for assessment   
Grading will be based on attendance (40%) and final paper (60%).
