Exploring the Language System and its Function

授業の目標

本講義では、言語の文法的および意味的側面に焦点を当て、ことばの仕組みと機能を探っていく。その目標は以下の3つである。
1. 文法と意味に関する研究領域において、中心的なトピックを把握し、それらについて議論する。
2. 複数の言語データを比較したり、複数の分野の知見を援用したりすることで、広い視点から言語について考える力を養う。
3. 言語データに関する議論と発表を通して、自己の考えを分かりやすく伝えたり、相手の考えについて批判的に検討したりするスキルを高める。

Goals of the course

In this course, we will explore the structure and function of language, focussing on its grammatical and semantic aspects. The course has three main objectives:
1. To understand and discuss key topics in the fields of grammar and meaning
2. To develop a broad perspective on language by comparing data from multiple languages and incorporating insights from various disciplines
3. To enhance skills in articulating one's own ideas clearly and critically evaluating others' opinions through discussions and presentations on linguistic data

授業の概要

文法と意味に関わる諸領域の中で、形態論・統語論・意味論・語用論の4つの領域を扱う。それぞれの分野の基礎的な事柄から始め、より発展的な内容にも触れていく。基礎的な事柄については、担当教員 (瀬楽) が夏学期に行う「言語研究入門８/B」と共通する部分が多いが、その講義ではカバーしていない発展的な内容についても解説・議論を行う。
授業は、教員の説明をもとにして、ディスカッション形式で行っていく。従って、自分の意見を述べたり、相手に質問や反論をしたりと、積極的な授業参加が望まれる。

Overview of the course

This course covers four key areas within the study of grammar and meaning: morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. We will start with fundamental concepts in each field and gradually explore more advanced topics. While many of the foundational topics overlap with those covered in “Introduction to Linguistic Research 8/B” (taught by Tohru Seraku in the summer semester), this course will also introduce and discuss more advanced content not covered in that lecture.
Classes will be conducted in a discussion-based format, guided by the teacher’s explanations. Therefore, active participation is encouraged, including expressing one's opinions, asking questions, and engaging in critical discussions with other students.

事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】

授業資料のほとんどは事前にオンラインで閲覧可能な状態にしておくので、受講者は事前に資料を読み、分からない点をまとめておくこと。講義が終わったら、資料にもう一度目を通し、分からなかった点が解決できたかを確認する。課題が出された場合は、その場合はその課題について取り組み、自分の考えを授業中に教員や他の受講者に説明できるようにしておく。

Preview/review

Most of the course materials will be made available online in advance, so students are expected to read the materials beforehand and note any points they do not understand. After the lecture, students should review the materials again to check if any previously unclear points have been resolved. If assignments are given, students should work on them and be prepared to explain their thoughts to the teacher and other students.

履修上の注意

教員が作成した配布資料を用いる。言語学の初歩的な知識があると望ましいが、言語学のバックグランドが無い学生も歓迎する。授業の進度とレベルについては、受講者の背景知識・理解度・関心に応じて調整する。

Notes

The materials distributed in class will be created by the instructor. While it is desirable for students to have a basic understanding of linguistics, those without a background in linguistics are also welcome. The pace and level of the class will be adjusted according to the students' background knowledge, understanding, and interest.
