授業の目標

Goals of the course
This course discusses the nature and discourse of multiculturalism through examining contemporary migration and major national, ethnic and/or racial minorities shaping Japanese society, ranging from the ‘ethnic’ migration to high-skilled workers and international students. By looking into ethnicity, gender, as well as social and cultural capital as focal aspects of diversity, the course aims to explain how multiculturalism emanates in everyday life in Japan. At the end of this course, students should become familiar with the following:
・Major sociological perspectives and debates that are relevant to understanding concepts such as ethnicity, minority, and diversity
・Diverse ethnic and minority groups in Japanese society
・Use of intersectionality as an analytical lens for discussing social issues pertaining to the ethnic and cultural diversity in Japan

Notes
Some modifications may be expected. A detailed syllabus will be distributed in class. Our goal in this class will not be to memorize or master a series of clear-cut answers; rather, by engaging in lively discussions, we aim to hone our ability to ask critical questions so as to further develop our skills as writers, readers and thinkers. In order to create such a learning environment, students should speak to each other and the instructor with respect. Abusive and harsh language will not be tolerated. Students with special needs should notify the instructor as early as possible.
