Goals of the course   
Students are expected to acquire sufficient historical knowledge of postwar Japan necessary for further study of Japanese society and politics.

Overview of the course   
With a focus on politics and foreign relations, this course traces the evolution of Japanese society chronologically since 1945. The course is divided into three parts: 1 State reconstruction, 2 Cold War stability and prosperity, and 3 Japan undergoing “scrap and build”?

Grading system for assessment   
1. Mid-term essay: 40%

Explain how the structure of dependence of Japan on the United States was formed in 1,000 words or more, including footnotes and bibliography. The essay does not have to be comprehensive; set your own perspective and focus. The essay should have a title conveying the content (not “mid-term essay”). All sources must be specified by creating in-text citations, endnotes/footnotes (if necessary), and a reference list.

[Format] A word-processing file or a PDF file

2. End-term essay: 40%

Write what you consider as the most critical issue in contemporary Japanese society and explain why it is so critical in 1,000 words or more, including footnotes and bibliography. The essay should have a title conveying the content (not “end-term essay”). All sources must be specified by creating in-text citations, endnotes/footnotes (if necessary), and a reference list.

3. Participation in in-class activities (including ALH1&2): 20%

The assigned readings for weeks 2 to 13 are the starting points for class discussion. Students are expected to prepare for class by reading the assigned texts, and to actively participate in the discussion. Students who actively participate in the class discussions will be highly graded.

Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the assigned readings. Earnest reviewing will improve the quality of your arguments in class discussion and in the short essays.

The lectures will be delivered both in the classroom and online at the same time in the regular timeslot, Thursday 3rd period.

The lectures will be delivered in English. But the students may ask questions and share opinions either in English or Japanese. If a question or an opinion is given in Japanese, the instructor will translate it into English so that it will be shared with all members of the class.
