This course will give an overview of the Wildlife Conservation and Management in Africa and in the context of Botswana. The course deals with the period from colonial rule to the independence period (the 1960s), with a reflection on post-independence period for appreciation of aspects of tourism in Africa. Emphasis will be on wildlife conservation and establishment of game reserves and national parks, with particular attention to the evictions of indigenous people from the Moremi Game Reserve (Okavango, north-west of Botswana) in comparison to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (Ghanzi, central to west of Botswana). The course will be taught mainly in chronological sequence, drawing from multidisciplinary sources.
