授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
The aim of this course is to familiarise students with performance studies with a special focus on Japan. By the end of the course, students should be able to build their knowledge of contemporary Japanese society by critically examining gendered and sexualised images of the performing arts in Japan.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
The course will introduce the anthropological perspective on performing arts and Japanese culture. The class will discuss key performative aspects including the body, gender and art in Japan, highlighting localised and globalised performances in Japan.

事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
 
Preview/review   
Students are expected to read the assigned readings and discuss related topics in class on a weekly basis. They will also observe or participate in a performance as fieldwork. After conducting a mini-ethnographic project, students will write an essay on it, which will be due at the end of the course.
