授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
This coures is specially for students who are interested in and are eager to pursue the career of an interpreter/translator, dealing with the current topics of social sciences, to examine the impact of digital infuence, social media tends, its strengths, and weaknesses for strategic communication purposes.

Students will gain extensive knowledge of the contemporary issues required for any interpreter/translator and how the media and communication industries are affected by the rise of social media in a globalized world.

Overview of the course   
Current online news articles in English will be used as the basis for discussion side by side with textbooks.

Students will be analyzing media texts and articles online and will be guided towards critical, creative and persuasive writing skills for their presentation and writing assignments.

Students will prepare and conduct interviews, do research and collect data to present current social issues/topics happening in Japan and around the world.

Students will produce a persuasive writing report/a review of public interest.

第1回
1. Orientation and Introduction of Course requirements. Students to introduce themselves to one another. Students to discuss and understand the requirements of the assignments assigned.
第2回
2. Undertanding of Mass Media. Discussion of the various international news online. BBC, CNN, CNBC, New York Times, Channel News Asia, etc.
第3回
3. Discussion of current social issues and problems with mass media and social media. Students to discuss and work together on a choice of topic for their research and interviews. Students to start working on the 1st Assignment using the assignment template given.
第4回
4. Understanding of the 3Cs, 5 Ws and 1H of critical and informative writing. Students will learn about crtical writing skills through Mass Media online news articles.

5. Learning the technique of interviewing to prepare for media writing of feature articles. Students to learn about the structure of feature articles and in writing critically and creatively.

6. Conducting interviews and to do research on student's choice of a current social interest/issue.

ALH1: Feature Article Writing: To conduct research and interviews on a current social interest and issue. Students to write a Informative report based on the research and interviews and to present it individually during lesson 7.

8. Understanding Communication process; Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication. Students will watch videos and to learn from the different articles written online on critical versus creative writing. Part 2: Understanding cultural differentiation and about miscommunication. Students to role play to learn about how to prevent miscommunication when interacting with people from different cultures.

9. Understanding critical and persuasive writing skills online via the various social media platforms. Understanding the three persuasive rhetorical appeals. Students to apply what makes for a persuasive speech and writing using rhetorical appeals through different class activities and presentations.

10. Learning about Oral Presentation and Public Speaking and on Persuasive Speaking.

11. Sutdents to practise on a chosen topic for the effective oral speaking skills. Students to start preparing for the food/drink review for the next lesson.
第12回
ALH2
ALH2: Persuasive Writing of a Food Review: To conduct research, visit and eat at a dining venue to write a food/drink review of cultural heritage on an International context. Students to write the persuasive review and to present it individually during lesson 12. There will also be a final reflection to be submitted during lesson 13.

13. Presentation of Poster and Persuasive Review. Summary of Lessons 1 to 12. Final reflection paper.

Grading system for assessment   
Evaluation based on:
Presentation report (30%) Active Learning (30%) Final Presentation and Review (40%)

Basis of Evaluation:
AL (1): Students will be able to research, conduct an interview about a social interest/issue and in developing a writing report and an infomative conclusion to the audience/reader.

Active learning: Students will be able to collaborate and work as a group in discussing and presenting a final social interest/issue together creatively using a mass media/social media choice of application (30%)

AL(2): Students will be able to research a cross-cultural understanding of a heritage food/drink context for a written review and in presenting it to inform and persuade the audience/reader. Students will be able to write effectively, critically and persuasively (40%)

Preview:
Students are able to do extensive research on topic of choice through online articles, interviews and academic articles.

Review:
Students are able to research and experience the cross cultural understanding via writing of a food revew and being able to reflect on one's learning experience from the research, written reports and presentation.
