West Asian and North African Culture Studies A: Culture of Turkey: A Palimpsest Survey
 
授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
Turkey is a country situated at the crossroads between Europe and Asia Its geographic position between East and West has given its habitants an opportunity to combine and enjoy different cultural practices. These practices vary by ethnicity, age, education, region, family background and social status. The aim of this course is to show that Turkish society has blended the influences of traditional Islamic values with Eastern, Mediterranean and Western inspirations. The course also aims to develop students’ skills in discussing and reading about the common traditions, beliefs, arts, cultural diversities and daily lives of Turkish people.

Overview of the course   
This course is an interdisciplinary exploration of the multi-cultural aspects of Turkish society in the context of history, literature, art, folklore, beliefs, customs and traditions through lectures, readings, documentaries, recordings and slides. Students are expected to attend classes, participate in the discussions and take exams.

There will be a midterm, ALH reports and a final exam.
