授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
In this class, we will read a selection of so-called "modern & contemporary" short stories written by Japanese authors and translated into English. The goal will be for us not only to familiarize ourselves with some of the major players in the Japanese literary world since the Meiji period, but also to recognize the influence of Western culture upon the various writing styles that have developed in Japan and that now have, in turn, spread into the West (e.g. the "international" writings of Murakami Haruki, who has been translated into around 50 languages worldwide).
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
Students will weekly read a selection of stories from the text, lead weekly discussions and present on the authors (depending of the number of students, this may be assigned to more than one student per week), and do short papers on a text or author of their choice. The final paper will be an in-depth analysis of one or more stories from the text, using citations.

Grading system for assessment   
General participation: 20%
Presentations (i.e. leading a discussion): 20%
ALH: 20% (i.e. 10% x 2)
Final paper: 40%
