History of the English Language
 
授業の目標   
１．英語史の概略を理解する。
２．英語の歴史を単に過去へさかのぼるのみでなく、過去・現在・未来を様々な視点から検討し、理解を深める。
３．英語学的観点から英語を通時的・共時的に分析する基礎力を養う。
 
Goals of the course   
1. To understand the outline of the history of the English language.
2. To examine the past, present and future of the English language from various perspectives.
3. To obtain the ability to examine the English language from diachronic and synchronic perspectives.
 
授業の概要   
ひとつの言語の歴史は単純に言語学的な側面から分析できるものではなく、その言葉を話す人々の歴史と切り離すことはできません。またその言葉の変遷を検討するには、その言葉で書かれた書物や史的資料を綿密に検討する必要があります。さらに、ヨーロッパの片隅に浮かぶ島国の言語であった英語が、世界的に用いられるようになり、インターネットなどの新しいメディアを通じてさらにその役割を広げていく中で、その言葉はさらに変遷を遂げていきます。本講義では、以下に挙げる教科書を主な素材とし、いま私たちが使用する英語がどのように誕生し発達してきたのかについて、英語学的視点から検討していきます。また、西洋史、書物史、文化史といった複合的な視野も導入し、英語の歴史をより詳細に紐解きます。
 
Overview of the course   
The history of any language must be considered not only from linguistic perspectives, but you will be required to learn the history of the people who speak the language. It is also important to examine written (and recorded, if available) records of the language throughout history. As to English, its historical changes are unimaginably dynamic; a language that was spoken in a small island in the northern part of Europe has eventually become a global language. Following the guidance of the textbook written by Simon Horobin, we will look into where English came from, how it developed, and what future might await English.

事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
予習は、教科書の指定範囲を講読し、授業内で予告したポイントについて検討してもらいます。

復習というよりは、各授業で興味をもったことがあれば、さらに自分で調べる作業に時間を割いてほしいと思います。その中で学期末レポートの題材を見つけていくのが理想的だと思います。また授業内ではさまざまなエクササイズを提示しますので、興味を持った内容はさらに取り組みを深めてみてください。
 
Preview/review   
Students are expected to read the assigned part of the textbook in advance, especially focusing on the points emphasized in class.

It is recommended that students further explore some of the topics discussed in class as part of reviewing. It will be ideal if such an exploration will lead to finding a topic for the final essay.
