Overview of the course
This course is survey of the main discussions, achievements, and problems related to the broad field of academic enquiry known as Cultural Studies. The field of cultural studies is so vast, however, that any semester course requires a selection of contents, since a truly comprehensive account would be virtually impossible. Consequently, this class offers a particular version of cultural studies that incorporates topics analyzed from an anthropological viewpoint. Based on close readings of selected writers, we will discuss the key concepts, texts, and scope that make up cultural studies today. By paying attention to its history, development, theory, and practice, students will learn the importance, influence, and legacy of cultural studies in the contemporary world.

DAY 3 Visual Culture. First Period In contemporary societies we are surrounded by the products of visual culture. Ever since its invention in 1839, the photographic image and its steady evolution have shaped our experience of reality—from chronicling our changing world to anchoring us to consumer culture. But despite the meteoric rise of photography to a mass medium over the past century and a half, there’s something different about visual culture in the digital age. In this class, two overarching themes shape our examination of visual culture. Firstly, a shift from modernity to postmodernity. Secondly, we shall place particular emphasis on the city, for visual culture is intimately linked to urban life.
