Introduction to Religious Studies

宗教学に入門する。宗教を研究の対象とする場合、常に独特の難しさが付きまとう。というのも、宗教を学問的に理解しようとする試みには、常に「信じていない人には宗教はわからない」という批判が突きつけられるからだ。講義を通して、宗教という現象の重層性や、他者が信じる宗教を理解することの難しさを知る。そして、宗教研究の様々な方法論を学び、それぞれの方法論に関して利点や問題点を知ったうえで、対象と関心に即して適切に使用できるようになる。

Studying religions academically is accompanied by unique difficulties. Scholars have to, for example, confront with a strong counterargument: only those who believe understand religion fully, and scholars do not because they are outsiders. It is as if outsiders cannot see the interior and the secret treasure of religion. Here is, for example, a major aporia in religious studies. Through the course, students learn difficulty in understanding religion, and gain knowledge in major methodologies of religious studies. Students will become able to use proper methodology according to their own interest and the object of their study.

世界各地にみられる個別具体的な宗教（「○○教」「××教」）について学ぶ授業ではない。
われわれの社会にはさまざまな文化現象をみることができるが、そのなかで「宗教」とはどのようなものなのか？ 「無宗教」を標榜する世俗化した人びとが多く暮らす社会のなかで「宗教」はどのような形で存在しているのか？ といった問題をあつかう。
宗教を例にとりながら、社会や文化を研究する方法についてあらためて考えてみたい。

This course is not about learning specific religions in the world. Rather, we would like to discuss such problems as "what is religion in our society?", "where do we find religion(s) in today's secular society?".
Religion is a good topic, as we reconsider the ways we understand other people's culture.
