授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
The purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge of key issues in second language pragmatics and issues related to pragmatics instruction. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of major topics in the field of linguistic pragmatics.

2. Discuss and evaluate their own language learning experiences in relation to various topics related to pragmatics.

3. Identify and evaluate instances of pragmatics in language teaching materials that they are familiar with.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
This course provides students with an overview of the major areas of study in second language (L2) pragmatics. Particularly, students will participate in interactive lectures and group discussions designed to help them make connections between the course content and their own experiences with learning pragmatics in a language beyond their first.

Because pragmatics deals with personal/cultural elements of language, a number of unique challenges arise in relation to pragmatics instruction. Students will learn about some of these challenges and then critically evaluate language teaching/learning materials according to how well they address these issues.

Class 15 ALH2: *Evaluate the instruction of issues related to pragmatics in a language textbook for a language you are familiar with. Submit a brief report of approximately 1,000 words. In general late work will not be accepted. Instances of plagiarism will be given a score of 0 for the assignment.

Grading system for assessment   
Grades for this course will be calculated as follows:
1. AL Assignment 1 (20%)
2. AL Assignment 2 (20%)
(Reports must be submitted by the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted. Copying and plagiarism are subject to penalties, resulting in zero points for the assignment. )
3. Review Quizzes (x3) 30%
4. Class Participation 30%
Active participation in class discussions is essential.

Preview/review   
Students are required to read the course materials before each class and summarize what they have learned during the session. Students should also prepare questions that they have about the course material. Previewing and reviewing course content will be assessed as part of course participation.

この授業は、英語のみによる講義に慣れていない学生向けに、より平易な英語で開講されます。成績は原則英語力ではなく、授業への取り組みによって評価されます。

This course is taught in simpler language than regular lectures in English. It is especially recommended to students who are not familiar with lectures taught in English only. Student performance is assessed by its content rather than the English language level.
