[COIL] Peace Communication: How to design “peace”
If two cards labelled “War” and “Peace” were lined up in front of us, we would probably believe that most people would choose the “Peace” card. However, “War” has never disappeared in our history. Why is it? We could analyze the root causes or background of war from the perspectives of peace studies, international relations and/or international politics. However, this would not be sufficient to understand the mechanism of prevailing war. To supplement it, this class focuses on the communication perspective such as advertising, public relations and media which have been historically heavily involved in war affecting individuals. There is the huge influence of us "public opinion" to expand the war, even though it is the politicians to make the decision to start the war. Thus, this class sheds light on the emotional aspect of the public through various communication means.

This interactive class focuses on "Peace Communication" as the umbrella theme which is heavily related to war and peace. To understand this theme, this class studies mainly three topics such as propaganda, media literacy and negotiation. Various interactive means including workshops and gamification are introduced to students to critically learn and even actually experience the mock-situation regarding the topics. It also helps students understand "peace dilemma". In the end of the class, students are expected to develop learning contents incorporating the communication perspective for designing peace. During the class, there would be the opportunity to interact with students in the US online regarding the issues to widen students' perspectives.
