Goals of the course   
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to understand a basic concept of development and comprehensive knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals, including its targets and indicators.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
The countries of the world in terms of living standards and development are divided into different levels. The United Nations and developed countries have made many efforts for developing countries to achieve development. These efforts have been reflected in the form of development goals such as Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals.
This course will pave the way for the students to understand the United Nations' initiatives and missions regarding development issues in the Sustainable Development Goals framework.

Grading system for assessment   
• Class participation: 10 points
• Students presentation: 40 points
• Final paper: 50 points
 
事前・事後学習【要する時間の目安】   
 
Preview/review   
Prerequisites are not required for joining the course. Students with different backgrounds can join.
At the end of each session, questions for brainstorming will be raised and followed by the discussion.

Group presentation
Students will be divided into 4 groups based on the size of the class. Each group will prepare 20 to 25 slides and analyze the impact of the SDGs on a developing country. The selection of a developing country depends on the student's choice.
Each group will present their findings for 30 minutes, followed by a discussion for 15 minutes.
The 17 goals of the SDGs will be divided into 4 groups as below:

• Group A: Goals 1, 5, 9, 13
• Group B: Goals 2, 6, 10, 14
• Group C: Goals 3, 7, 11, 15
• Group D: Goals 4, 8,12, 16, 17

Term paper
As a requirement, the students must write a brief term paper. The paper should be focused on the “Analysis of the impact of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the development of a developing country in 5 years (2016 to 2021)”
The paper should cover the below points:
– How much the country has achieved the set targets?
– How do they collect and analyze the data? as well as in which disaggregation? (Men, women, children, disabled...)
– What are their national strategies related to that goal?
– How and to whom do they report the progress of that goals?
– What are their barriers and challenges?
The selection of the country and goal of SDGs depends on the student's choice
The final paper of the students should be 500 to 600 words.
