トク・ピシンはパプア・ニューギニアの人口のおよそ半数によって話される共通語である。英語を語彙供給源とするピジン・クレオールの代表例として、社会言語学の教科書などでしばしば取り上げられる。しかし、その性格は十分に理解されているとは言えない。トク・ピシンを単なる簡略化された英語とみなすのは偏った見方である。実際には、英語よりも複雑な側面をもつ場合もある。
トク・ピシン言語共同体は、母語話者を中心とする社会ではない。英語を語彙供給源とする点でパプア・ニューギニアにとって外来の言語でもあるが、英語とは別の規範を持つに至った点でも、話者の意識の点でもパプア・ニューギニア独自の言語である。
トク・ピシンはパプア・ニューギニアでは単なる共通語であるだけではなく、人と親しく交流するために好適な言語である。また、ソロモン諸島のソロモン・ピジン、バヌアツのビスラマなど兄弟格の言語とは、一定の相互理解が可能で、パプア・ニューギニアにおいて民際的であるのみならず、国際的な言語でもある。
この授業では、トク・ピシンが実際にどう使用されるか、発音から語彙、文法に至るまでを学ぶ。そのことによって、トク・ピシンの表現様式を身につけ、言語体系全体への理解を深めることを目指す。

Tok Pisin is a lingua franca spoken by approximately half of the population in Papua New Guinea. It is frequently highlighted in sociolinguistics textbooks as a representative example of a pidgin-creole language with English as its lexifier. However, its true nature remains insufficiently understood. Viewing Tok Pisin merely as a simplified form of English provides a skewed perspective. In fact, there are certain aspects in which it exhibits greater complexity than English.
The Tok Pisin speech community is not centred around native speakers. While it can be considered an introduced language in Papua New Guinea due to its lexicon, which is mostly derived from English, it has developed its own distinct norms separate from English. Furthermore, in terms of speaker perception, it has evolved into a uniquely Papua New Guinean language.
In Papua New Guinea, Tok Pisin is not only a lingua franca but also a language particularly suited for fostering close interpersonal interactions. Additionally, it shares a degree of mutual intelligibility with its sister languages, such as Solomon Pijin in the Solomon Islands and Bislama in Vanuatu. In this sense, Tok Pisin is not merely a medium for cross-community communication within Papua New Guinea but also functions as an international language.
In this course, we will explore Tok Pisin as it is actively used in daily life, examining its pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Through this exploration, we aim to uncover the structural patterns of its expressions and gain a deeper understanding of its linguistic system as a whole.

Evaluation will be based on daily attendance, active participation in discussion, and class activities which may include quizzes and the final exam of this course. Attendance is essential in this class.

Students are expected to attend class every day and consistently complete their daily preparation and review.

本授業は、アジア・アフリカ言語文化研究所の言語研修（8月29日～9月19日全75時間）として東京（アジア・アフリカ言語文化研究所）で実施される。通常の集中講義とは異なる日程・会場で行われるので、注意のこと。
なお、受講希望者に対するガイダンスを３月初旬又は中旬および４月にアジア・アフリカ言語文化研究所棟3階会議室で実施するので参加すること（履修登録必須要件）。日時詳細は後日学務情報システムのトップページに掲載する。9月卒業予定者は受講しないこと。
※単位互換制度を利用して受講する外部の学生は、必ず単位互換制度の手続きを期限内に完了させること。手続きの詳細は所属大学の教務課で確認すること。
※受講ガイダンスの出席（全員）および単位互換制度手続きの完了（特別聴講学生のみ）が必須となるので注意すること。

This course is offered as a part of the Intensive Language Course (ILC) of
the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA).
Please read carefully and note the following conditions:
1.The period of the course is from 29th August to 19th September (75
hours in total) and the venue is ILCAA in Tokyo.
2. Students who intend to register for this course must participate in the
orientation of ILC, which will be held in the early or middle of March and April 2025.
3. The details of the orientation will be announced on the top page of
Information System site (https://gakumu-web1.tufs.ac.jp/portal/) in due course.
4. Participation in this orientation is a prerequisite for your
registration.
5. Students who intend to graduate by the end of the 2nd semester of 2025
cannot register for this course.
6. Please make sure that you need to complete the application for the mutual exchange of credits program by the deadline before registration of this course. For more information on the required procedures, please contact the division for educational affairs at your university.
7. Attendance at the orientation is mandatory for all students, and only eligible students are allowed to apply for the exchange of credits program.
