[COIL] Postwar U.S.-Japan Relations
As a common goal of all COIL courses, students are expected to cultivate intellectual flexibility and resilience through international academic discussions with U.S. students in English. As for this course in particular, students will problematize and re-examine common understandings concerning the “U.S.-Japan alliance” by critically exploring its historical development.
Starting from the end of the Pacific War, this one-week intensive course will trace the historical development of U.S.-Japan relations in the Cold War, the euphoria after the Cold War, and the “war on terrorism.” In addition to lectures delivered by the instructor, much time will be allocated to class discussion in order to prepare for the online international discussion with students at California State University, Northridge, on the final day of the week.
