Goals of the course   
Recognize the basic elements of traditional Japanese architecture and its relationship with the natural environment.
Describe the main aspects of the cultural exchange between Japan and other countries that have shaped the concept of sustainability
Discuss the main aspects of the environmental problems in contemporary Japanese architecture.
Explain how Japanese architects understand the concept of sustainability.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
This course is intended to introduce students to the notions of sustainability in architecture and urban design within the Japanese context from the viewpoint of the cultural exchange between Japan and the World. The students will read and analyze written and audiovisual materials provided by the instructor to engage in in-class discussions. The course is organized into 4 main thematic areas; we will hold two workshops in class where students will discuss on a given topic and then submit a short reflection Prior knowledge of architecture and/or urban planning is not necessary, but you should be curious and proactive. Active learning, in-class work, and peer review are essential parts of this course; thus, you are expected to actively participate during class time.

成績評価の方法・基準   
 
Grading system for assessment   
40%. Active participation in class. This will be assessed through class preparation, quizzes, group activities, and class debates, among other activities.
15%: Report 01
10% Active participation in workshop I.
10%: Report 02
15% Active participation in workshop II.

Preview/review   
This class is based on the Team Based learning methodology (TBL). Homework will mainly consist of short readings and video presentations that will prepare students for class. During class time students will take part in application activities in small groups.

The syllabus may change depending on the students’ needs.
The number of students in this course is limited to 40. It is mandatory to attend the first class if you want to enroll in this course. If the event that more than 40 students wish to enroll in the course, they will be selected on a random basis (lottery).
