Goals of the course   
The main goal of the course is to introduce the students to key themes and events that shaped the contemporary International Political Economy of East Asia. The students will critically analyze the issues and challenges for sustained regional growth and development.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
Despite a turbulent past, and against the backdrop of volatile regional politics, East Asia achieved remarkable economic growth during the so-called miracle economy years of the post-war up to the 1990s. At present, however, the East Asian region is facing several economic and political challenges that have major implications for its economic and political stability. In this course, the factors that propelled the East Asian economic growth and the issues and challenges to sustain regional growth and stability are examined. After introducing the main economic features of the region, the first half of the course discusses Japan’s developmental state model, which is essential in understanding Japan’s post-war industrialization and economic development. The varieties of the “guided development” model and their impact on other East Asian states will then be discussed. The second half of the course examines the current issues in the region and explores the challenges that East Asian states face in pursuing further growth and development.
