Goals of the course   
Intercultural competence has become indispensable for citizens of the globalizing world. In addition, digital technology is increasingly connecting people worldwide and is applicable to the education arena as well. This class is to help students equip intercultural competence through international education practices and the learning-by-teaching method. Students will be able to participate in collaborative online international learning (COIL) with the students in the US. Based on the COIL experience and the theories learned, students will have the opportunity to develop a lesson plan for intercultural competence and implement it in a classroom. Student learning is expected to deepen through this process. This course is also expected to develop English proficiency through many discussion opportunities.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
This course mainly consists of three parts: theoretical learning, collaborative online international learning (COIL), and learning-by-teaching. Theoretical learning overviews related theories on intercultural competence, culture, identity, education, international education, teaching, learning and instructional design. COIL will be conducted with universities in the US. Students will be asked to participate in collaborative activities and discussion opportunities with students both in their classroom and overseas. Learning-by-teaching involves students developing a lesson plan to nurture intercultural competence among their classmates, using learned theories and online session experiences. Finally, students implement a lesson plan for their classmates and receive feedback.

成績評価の方法・基準   
 
Grading system for assessment   
1) Essay and presentation: 70%
・Attending and contributing to the COIL sessions: 20%
・Analytical report of the COIL session: 20%
・Final presentation (teaching session): 30%

2) Class performance: 30%
Attendance is must as this class have many in-class activities. Students are expected to actively participate in online and in-class activities.

Previewing the references indicated in the previous sessions is expected as preparation for a class.

Notes   
- The partner university for COIL will be San Diego State University, US.
- The class schedule and partner institutions for COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) are subject to change.
- COIL Zoom interaction is scheduled at 9-10 AM, Wednesday, April 29. Those who don't have a schedule conflict, please join.
- Students shall be invited to voluntarily complete a questionnaire before and after COIL to assess any changes resulting from participation. Details are to be annouced.
