授業の目標   
 
Goals of the course   
Through this class, students will increase their English skills, while focusing on the topic of American culture and its interaction with other cultures in the world. They will develop skills of listening comprehension, note-taking, discussion, writing, and presentation, as well as enhancing their ability to think critically and to synthesize information from various sources into discussions and presentations.
 
授業の概要   
 
Overview of the course   
The class will feature mini-lectures, individual tasks, discussions, and other group work. There will be quizzes, and a final student presentation and essay. Students are required to do homework in order to prepare for and discuss issues in class. For the final presentation, students will choose countries they are interested in and do Internet research to report on the impacts or interaction of some aspects of American culture in those countries. All communication in class will be conducted in English.

成績評価の方法・基準   
 
Grading system for assessment   
・Active participation* in class ctivities: 50%
・Homework and/or quizzes: 20%
・Presentation: 20%
・Essay: 10%

*Note: Active participation is based on in-class performance, which includes such elements as spoken contributions, completion of in-class tasks, participation in pair or group discussions, active note-taking and listening, as well as preparedness for the class activities. It does not mean just attendance.

Preview/review   
Students must complete required homework assignments (reading and/or writing homework to prepare for in-class activities). Students must be prepared to participate actively in every class.

※Summer Intensive Englishは夏学期の履修登録期間中に履修登録を行います。
この科目は学内にて対面形式で開講されるスピーキング力強化を目標とした授業です。TOEICのスコア指定はありませんが、積極的に発言し、スピーキング力を伸ばす意欲がある学生を対象とします。
・定員: 25名（新カリキュラム・旧カリキュラム合計、先着順、それぞれ定員に達し次第締め切り）
・8月25日（月）から8月29日（金）までの5日間、2限・3限・4限に対面で開講されます。全ての曜日と時限（15回分の授業）に参加できることを履修の条件とします。

備考 No textbook required. Materials will be distributed in class by the instructor and students will be asked to search for suitable resource materials relating to the topics.
