The course aims to engage students in the discussion of the Japanese language in the contemporary world. Hence, at the end of the course, students must be able to:
(a) Genuinely recognize Japanese being used and learned globally; (b) Adequately explain why Japanese has been used and learned globally concerning historical and contemporary contexts; (c) Comprehensively discuss the (socio)linguistic situation of Japanese in the world; and (d) Effectively seek ways to address issues and challenges concerning the (socio)linguistic situation of Japanese in the world.

The Japanese language is one of the global languages. Aside from more than 120 million native speakers mostly residing in Japan, Japanese and its varieties have been used outside Japan due to Japanese migration to the Americas (the US, Brazil, Peru, etc.) and colonial expansion to the Asia-Pacific (Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Palau, etc.). Conversely, Japanese is also used by non-native speakers as a second language or a migrant language. Furthermore, approximately 3.8 million people learn the language as a foreign language worldwide as of 2021, and the number of learners has been increasing.
As such, this course discusses various topics on the Japanese language as a global language. First, the course overviews the use of the Japanese language and its varieties in the world. Second, the course discusses various problems and issues concerning the (socio)linguistic situation of Japanese and the varieties of Japanese in the world. Finally, the course encourages students to address current problems and issues and offers recommendations and suggestions to address these problems and issues.

Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class by asking questions and being engaged in discussions in English. Students are also required to submit brief reflection papers per day as this is a one-week intensive course. Students also give a presentation on a selected topic in Japanese around the world and submit an academic-style poster as a final report. More details will be given in the orientation.

Since this is a week-long intensive course, students are encouraged to attend all classes and actively participate in class discussions for their effective learning outcomes.

This course will be conducted purely online. Some changes in the schedule might be made depending on the number of students.
