Overview of the course
Globalization is a key concept utilized in a wide range of fields such as economics, politics, education, and culture. However, although often discussed, the term is seldom clearly defined, and arguments about its nature tend to polarize opinions in irreconcilable ways. In this class we will aim to explore the characteristics of globalization, and discuss from multiple angles the social changes it has generated. We will attempt to do this in a twofold manner: on the one hand, by placing the discussion in the contemporary world society; on the other hand we will discuss the actual implications that globalization has in the lives of people, organizations and cultures. How has Japan and Asia been transformed as a product of globalization? What have been, so far, its measurable effects? How can globalization help alleviate poverty and bring about world peace? What is the role of the Japanese state in highly contested processes of social change? Reflecting on these issues will help students build a solid conceptual framework for analyzing the global society, Japan’s place in the world, and its changing sociopolitical dynamics.

While opponents of globalization argue that the richer are getting richer and the poorer poorer, and that globalization generates increased economic dependence and political oppression in a fundamentally unequal world, advocates suggest that the main problem with globalization is that the world is still not global enough.
