ゼミ紹介
A graduate thesis offers students the opportunity to explore a topic of personal interest in depth and to produce a first original piece of scholarly work. It is a long-term project of research and writing that can initially feel intimidating. The purpose of this seminar is to guide the students through this long process, from the early stages of refining a research topic and formulating a research question, to carrying out appropriate fieldwork and to finally completing the writing of the thesis. Along the journey, students will learn the fundamentals of academic research and how to apply them in practice, discuss their progress and engage with the work of fellow classmates, and regularly receive constructive feedbacks aimed to improve the quality of their own research and writing. Student’s research topics should be related to politics, very broadly understood, including areas such as contemporary Japanese politics, political history, political thought, and comparative research. Additionally, students with strong interest in fields such as environmental history or postwar Japanese society may also be welcome. Please feel free to send me an email.
卒論・卒業研究について
A graduate thesis represents the final result of an original and personal research project. As a student, you are expected not only to adhere to elementary honesty but also to commit to academic integrity. Any suspicion of plagiarism or submitting work not completed by the student (but produced, for example, by an A.I.) may result in an automatic fail.
受講上の注意など
In principle, the thesis should be written in English. The seminar will be conducted primarily in English, but Japanese may be used where necessary. Students are very much encouraged to use primary sources in Japanese during their research. There are no formal prerequisites for enrollment. However, it is recommended that students take the following course: 「日本政治・経済2」 (Japanese Politics and Economy 2 [Introduction to Japanese Politics]) Students wishing to join the seminar are requested to submit an email briefly describing their interests and/or initial ideas. A meeting (in person or by Zoom) will then be scheduled to discuss the project in greater detail.
